A priori as infinite and inexhaustible

Recently, the whole world, leading industrialists, had no awareness of the limitation of the resources offered by the planet. It, with its immense continents, endless oceans and the enormous mass of its atmosphere, seemed an inexhaustible source in comparison with the smallness of man.

Things have evolved in recent decades thanks to the work of scientists and environmentalists, and also thanks to the media: everyone now knows that the planet is limited, that man is able to pollute all the atmosphere to the ozone layer, to cause greenhouse effects capable of disrupting temperatures throughout the globe, to oil entire coasts following the sinking of a single tanker, to pour into the oceans masses of plastic capable of forming a new continent (the Vortex, in the Pacific, already large as ten times France!), to degrade groundwater, to transform the most beautiful forests into gigantic sterile deserts…

Everyone seems aware of this finesse, but will that be enough to seriously curb harmful behaviour? Is it a real awareness, capable of changing behaviour in the long term, of making us feel in depth the limits of a small sphere of twelve thousand kilometers in diameter, and of a layer of ecological varnish that we apply to give us a good conscience?

The individual, when he does not feel observed, generally continues to think that his action, in itself minimal, will not change much to the situation. Worse than that, the major oil industries openly welcome the discovery of huge methane reserves, sufficient to replace oil over more than a century, claiming that natural gas is less polluting, and are radically stalemate over the consequences for global warming.

It is clear that ecological awareness as it is now being realized will not be enough to stop the spiral. Real awareness can only be achieved by going back to the real causes of the phenomenon. So by questioning the functioning of human psychism and its possible dysfunctions…
